ODNR: Was earthquake connected to fracking? Earthquake struck in Wayne Nat'l Forest where drilling is proposed

“This earthquake is a clear example of the risks involved in fracking,” Melanie Houston, director of oil and gas for the Ohio Environmental Council, said in a news release. She took the opportunity to criticize the federal government’s recent leasing of oil and gas rights in the Wayne National Forest. The earthquake reportedly struck in an area within the national forest, which adjoins and often surrounds private land holdings in Monroe County.

“Instead of charging ahead with leasing in the Wayne National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service should be considering what dangers we’re inviting into Ohio’s only national forest,” she said.
